Our residents have been extremely busy with their research endeavors this year! Let’s take a look back on what they have achieved so far.
Dr. Maryam Mehdipour Dalivand, Dr. Siham Hattab, and Dr. Hayk Simonyan attended the 2025 Annual United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology (USCAP) meeting in Boston in March.
Dr. Maryam Mehdipour Dalivand presented, “Implications of Atypical UroVysion Test Result in Urine Cytology: an Institutional Experience.”
Dr. Siham Hattab presented, “Chromosome 17 Monosomy in Breast Cancer: A Retrospective Analysis of Incidence and Clinicopathologic Correlation.”
Dr. Hayk Simonyan presented, “Prognostic Significance of Histologic Grade and Oncotype DX in Pleomorphic Invasive Lobular Carcinoma: A Decade of Institutional Experience.” His co-resident authors include Dr. Natalia Zamalloa and Dr. Siham Hattab.
Our residents also met up with former resident, Dr. Divya Mamilla, who was also presenting her own research at the conference.

Dr. Elham Arbzadeh, Division Chief of Cytopathology and Autopsy, and Dr. Maryam Mehdipour Dalivand presented on “Expression in Prostate Adenocarcinoma Grade Group 2 or Greater Occurs in the Absence of HER2 Gene Amplification.” Dr. Narine Muselimyan LeFevre, another resident, also serves as an author on this research.
They were supported by Dr. Irena Manukyan, an Associate Professor affiliated with the Department of Pathology through Children’s National Hospital; Dr. Antonia Sepulveda, Chair of the Department of Pathology; and Dr. Siham Hattab.

Dr. Abdelrahman Dabash, Dr. Maryam Mehdipour Dalivand, and Dr. Narine Muselimyan LeFevre attended the GW SMHS Research Showcase 2025 in April, providing moral support for their fellow co-residents.
Dr. Siham Hattab and Dr. Stevephen Hung presented on “Evaluation of Open-Source Artificial Intelligence Platform for Reading Microbiology Smears.”
Dr. Katelyn Swanson presented, “Detecting and Reporting Extended Spectrum Beta-Lactamases Producers: Evaluation of Three Approaches and the Clinical Impact.” She was mentored by Dr. Rebecca Yee and assisted by Dr. Paul Nagao, who has since joined the Department of Pathology as a first-year resident. This research was also presented at the 2024 Annual Meeting for the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP).
Dr. Hayk Simonyan presented, “Prognostic Significance of Histologic Grade and Oncotype DX in Pleomorphic Invasive Lobular Carcinoma: A Decade of Institutional Experience.” His co-resident authors include Dr. Natalia Zamalloa and Dr. Siham Hattab. They were mentored by Dr. Mohadese Behtaj and Dr. Shabnam Samankan.
Dr. Maher Ali presented, “Calcium Pyrophosphate Deposition Disease Mimicking Parotid Neoplasm: Significance of Frozen Section Tissue Analysis.” He was mentored by Dr. Shabnam Samankan and Dr. Elham Arbzadeh.

Dr. Siham Hattab also presented, “One-Year Experience and Diagnostic Utility of a Multiplex Joint Infection PCR Panel” at the American Society for Microbiology (ASM) Microbe 2025 in June. She was supported by Dr. Rebecca Yee, Assistant Professor in the Department of Pathology.
Dr. Natalia Zamalloa presented, “Clinical and Pathological Correlation of Thyroid Follicular Lesions with Genetic Alteration: A Single Institution Experience” at the 2025 American Thyroid Association (ATA) Annual Meeting in September.
Other research endeavors include Dr. Narine Muselimyan LeFevre’s presentation on, “Development and Molecular Characterization of Small Intestine adenomas and Adenocarcinomas in a Murine Model Carrying KRAS12D and CDKN2A/p16-loss Targeting LGR5 Progenitor Cells” at Digestive Disease Week 2025. An article was published by Dr. Maryam Mehdipour Daviland and Dr. Maher Ali, “Prevalence and Clinical Manifestation of Astrovirus Gastroenteritis in Adults: a 7-year study in Washington D.C., USA” in the MDPI Viruses journal. They were supported by Dr. Rebecca Yee. Dr. Maryam Mehdipour Daviland also wrote, “Investigating Intensity and Percentage of p53 Nuclear Expression in Prostate Cancer: Findings from a Cohort of U.S. Military Veterans” for MDPI Viruses.
While not research-related, Dr. Narine Muselimyan LeFevre, Dr. Stevephen Hung, Dr. Siham Hattab, and Dr. Maher Ali conducted a Cardiovascular Pathology Review with gross specimens for GW medical students.
