The Medical Microbiology section of the Genomic Molecular Pathology Division works in conjunction with the Clinical Microbiology Laboratory Services to provide rapid and accurate diagnosis of infectious diseases. Molecular methods offer improved turnaround times and increased sensitivity for clinical testing. Technologies such as RT-PCR allow for better detection and quantification of nucleic acids (DNA and RNA). The test menu includes syndromic, multiplex PCR tests for identification of parasites, bacteria, fungi, and viruses. We also offer molecular testing for viral load determination and detection of antimicrobial resistance genes. Our diverse menu allows us to provide timely diagnosis for all types of patients, including the immunocompromised population.
