The Clinical Microbiology Laboratory at George Washington University Hospital operates 24/7 and offers a full range of laboratory services including bacteriology, virology, mycology, mycobacteriology, and parasitology to help diagnose microbial infections. The laboratory also offers comprehensive testing for isolation, identification, and susceptibility testing of infectious pathogens. In addition to traditional culture-based methods and antigen testing assays, we also utilize cutting-edge technologies such as MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry and recently have expanded our molecular genomics department to include many molecular methodologies for detection of microorganisms.
In addition to our clinical services, we engage in clinical and translational research including development and evaluation of new diagnostic tools, and studies pertaining to patient outcomes, clinical utility, and epidemiology and outbreak investigations. We are actively engaged in teaching and training medical studies, residents, and fellows at George Washington University and affiliated institutions. We also work closely with Infectious Diseases, Antimicrobial Stewardship, and Infection Prevention and Control to ensure that high quality of care is present at George Washington University Hospital.
